In 2006, the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) was commissioned to conduct a baseline study on food education provision in Welsh schools.
In the consultation Appetite for Life (June 2006), the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) acknowledged the importance of developing knowledge of the school setting in improving food across the whole school day including nutrition, healthy eating, and cooking skills in the curriculum in order to influence the decisions made by children and young people in later life. There is also a commitment to ensuring healthy eating and cooking skills are given adequate consideration in the current curriculum review in Food and Well Being, the joint Food Standards Agency Wales and WAG nutrition strategy, which aims to improve the diet of the whole population, and in particular of priority groups such as children and young people.
