Food Standards Agency guidance on illegal meat and poultry meat for food law enforcement officers in Wales is in the process of being updated. Following the introduction of the European Union Food Hygiene Regulations on 1 January 2006, much of the legislation contained with the guidance has been repealed.
However, as other elements of the guidance remain valid, for example the advice on undertaking investigations, the guidance document below will remain available on the Agency's website until the updated version is available. It is expected that the revised version will be made available online by June 2006.
The guidance for food law enforcement officers in England and Scotland will also be updated online in due course.
The guidance provides advice on all aspects concerning the production and sale of illegal meat including identifying the correct legislation.
It also brings together several other guidance notes previously issued by the Agency on a variety of issues relating to the requirements for the production of meat for human consumption, such as cutting up of meat by butchers; private slaughter; smokies and Specificed Risk Material (SRM) and other BSE controls. During compilation of this guidance, key stakeholders, including the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS) and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), were consulted.
