What is RSS?Food Standards Agency Wales runs the annual Awards for Food Action Locally (AFAL) scheme to recognise individual or team contributions to local nutrition initiatives that have made a positive impact on the diet or eating habits of residents in the communities where they work.
The Awards give FSA Wales the opportunity to recognise and highlight the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm of those engaged in promoting better diet at the local level. Local community action tackling diet and nutrition is also key to the overall success of the nutrition strategy for Wales, 'Food and Well Being'.
Launched in December 2003, the Awards have provided excellent opportunities to highlight the good practice demonstrated by the winners and runners-up, and have been a real motivator for others wanting to undertake similar activities.
The Award scheme has also allowed FSA Wales to build up a more complete picture of the community food projects that exist across Wales. All nominated projects from the previous two years of the scheme form the heart of a searchable database on the 'Nutrition Network for Wales' website.
Back to topFSA Wales invites nominations each year for individuals, teams or projects that people feel have made a positive impact on the diet or eating habits of residents in the communities they serve for each round of its Awards for Food Action Locally.
The Awards are open to all individuals or organisations whose work aims to improve the diet of their local community in Wales. This includes key players across all sectors, such as community and voluntary workers, the education sector, caterers, retailers and food producers, local authorities and health boards who are working to make an impact at the community level.
Awards will be made to the five projects considered to make the most significant contribution to improving diet in their community. Five runners-up will also be awarded.
Entries are by completion of a nomination form and are judged by an independent selection panel.
Winners receive £2000 for investment into their healthy eating initiative. Runners-up receive £1000. Winners and runners-up will also receive a celebratory fruit bowl and a certificate.
