Building on the success of its AFAL (Awards for Food Action Locally) Scheme over the past five years, Food Standards Agency Wales is inviting applications for the 2009 awards. The AFAL awards recognise individual or team contributions to local nutrition initiatives that have made a positive influence on the diet or eating habits of residents in the communities within which they operate.
The awards are open to all individuals or organisations whose work seeks to improve the diet of their local community in Wales. This covers all sectors including community and voluntary workers, those in education, caterers, retailers, food producers, together with local authorities and health boards who are working to make an impact at community level. For this round of awards there are 3 nomination categories:
The ‘Appetite for Life’ Action Plan was published in February 2008 by the Welsh Assembly Government and sets out the strategic direction and actions required to improve the nutritional standards of food and drink provided in schools in Wales.
Awards will be presented to the five projects considered to make the most significant contribution to improving diet in their community, with five runners-up awards also being awarded. Winners will receive £2,000 for investment into their initiative and runners up will receive £1,000. All ten initiatives will also be presented with an engraved prize and a certificate. There will be at least one winner and one runner-up from each of the three categories.
In announcing the launch of the awards, Teresa Owen, Public Health Nutritionist and a member of the 2007-8 judging panel explained ‘We are particularly keen to see nominations relating to activities being undertaken in more disadvantaged communities in Wales where schemes to improve diet are greatly needed. We would also like to receive nominations from projects demonstrating partnership working, innovation or high levels of achievement with limited funds.’
