The Food Standards Agency has announced the launch of a new Welsh language website for those who want to learn more about the effects of having too much salt in the diet.
Recent research by the Agency 1 has shown salt to be one of the categories that people in Wales regularly check on food labels.
The website, salt.gov.uk/halen, provides information on the effects of eating too much salt and the simple steps that can be taken to reduce salt intake to no more than 6g a day. Three quarters of the salt we eat comes from processed food such as some breakfast cereals, soups, sauces, bread, biscuits and ready meals. Eating too much salt is a significant risk factor in developing high blood pressure, which can cause heart disease and stroke. In Wales these circulatory diseases accounted for 38% of all deaths in 2005 (Source: CMO Wales Annual Report 2006) An English version of the website was initially created by the FSA to support its salt campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of salt eaten by people in the UK.
Steve Wearne, Director of the Food Standards Agency in Wales said, 'The development of this website is part of the Agency’s commitments to the Welsh Language Scheme 2 and provides the FSA with a further platform on which to continue building its commitment to putting the consumer first. Other consumer facing websites will soon be available in Welsh.'

2 The Agency's first Welsh Language Scheme was published in 2002 and there has been a recent consultation on a revised version for 2008-2012. The scheme describes how the Agency plans to meet the requirements of the Welsh Language Act.
