To meet the growing demand for information about nutrition and healthy eating, Food Standards Agency Wales has made its eatwell website available in the Welsh language.
Eatwell is dedicated to providing reliable and practical advice on all aspects of food, diet and health to Welsh speakers. You can see the Welsh language version at (External) eatwell.gov.uk/?lang=cy
Included on the website is comprehensive information on general healthy eating, and how to achieve a balanced diet. For budding Olympians and those of all ages and life stages there is more specific dietary advice. There are also helpful tips on topics such as understanding food labels and food hygiene in the home.
In the recent Consumer Attitudes Survey conducted by the FSA in Wales, the Agency is seen as a reliable source of information for both food safety and healthy eating with over one in five people citing the Agency as a source of advice on healthy eating.
Steve Wearne, Director of FSA Wales said: 'The eatwell website has been an acknowledged source of advice on healthy eating for consumers for several years. It was developed as part of the Agency’s strategy to help consumers make informed choices, make it easier for people to choose a healthy diet, and reduce diet-related disease. As part of the Agency’s commitment to its revised Welsh Language Scheme, due to be launched later this year, development of a Welsh version of this advice and information has been a priority.'

The Agency's first Welsh Language Scheme was published in 2002 and a consultation on a revised version for 2008-2012, closed in February. The revised Scheme is due to be published later this year.
The latest wave of the FSA Consumer Attitudes Survey was conducted between August and October 2007. A total of 503 adults in Wales were interviewed.
Officials in the Agency’s Welsh language Unit, based in Cardiff, have collaborated on this project together with the Editorial/Web team based at the Agency’s headquarters in London.
Research carried out by the Welsh Language Board in 2004 found that over 600,000 people in Wales can speak Welsh. Over half of these consider themselves fluent in Welsh. Of those who could speak Welsh, 62% spoke Welsh daily. 88% of fluent speakers said that they spoke Welsh daily.
The FSA’s eatwell website is visited over 300,000 times a month with around onemillion pages viewed. (Source: Webtrends Feb 2008)
