FSA Wales has recently launched a new cooking resource, for those who work with young people. 'Get Cooking!' is an on-line resource for those leaders who wish to teach their group a basic understanding of cooking, food hygiene and healthy eating.
At the end of the six-week course the young people should feel more motivated about cooking for themselves and their friends, and also understand some basics principles on health and hygiene.
The resource comprises a trainers' guide and 30 recipe cards. The trainers' guide sets out the structure of the course, and identifies the equipment and ingredients that will be required. The six-week course has been designed to be easy to use and flexible, and contains all the information that is needed. It is easy to follow and guides the leader step by step through each of the areas to be covered.
As well as standard ingredients and method, the recipe cards also include nutrition information and comprehensive tips on healthy eating, money saving and food safety for that particular dish.
The concept of this 'Get Cooking!' resource has been developed from pilot courses that have been run over the past few years in a number of areas of Wales in partnership with other organisations such as the National Federation of Women's Institutes Wales and the Wales Youth Agency. The resource has been developed by the British Nutrition Foundation for Food Standards Agency Wales. It can be found on the Agency website at the link below.
Hilary Neathey of the Agency explained: 'From the response we received to the pilot 'Get Cooking!' courses we identified that there was a real need for a comprehensive resource such as this. This resource gives a leader all the materials needed to run the course, providing an opportunity for enjoyment and learning.'
Back to topSince March 2001 the Food Standards Agency has led on the preparation and implementation of a Nutrition Strategy and action plan for Wales. Its aim is to achieve a reduction in the incidence of diet-related ill health through the promotion of a healthier diet for the population of Wales, particularly those in disadvantaged areas. One of the actions contained in 'Food and Well Being' is to develop cooking sessions across Wales.
