Food Standards Agency Wales launches online education resource

Tuesday 22 March 2005

Ref: WA08/O5CK

Food safety and healthy eating are key messages in 'Uncle Arthur's Barbecue', an online educational resource for primary schools from Food Standards Agency Wales.

'Uncle Arthur's Barbecue' is an extended novel which tells the story of Uncle Arthur, Gareth, his sister Elli, and a tiny germ, to bring all-important food safety messages to life. Designed to be used by teachers of Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils, the resource covers curriculum areas of English and Welsh literacy. Other resources have also been produced to support the teaching of maths, science and music.

These have been produced in collaboration with primary school teacher, Philip Edwards, and NGfL Cymru, on whose website the resource may be found (see the link at the foot of this page).

In presenting 'Uncle Arthur's Barbecue' at the launch of the 'Pembrokeshire Food and Health Strategy' event in Pembroke Dock, Joy Whinney, Director of FSA Wales, explained how the resources directly met the objectives of the 'Food and Well Being Nutrition Strategy', jointly launched by the Welsh Assembly Government and the Agency in 2003. She added, ' In the strategy action plan we undertook to develop resources and to participate in the NGfL website. This resource meets both of those objectives, and supports teachers by providing online resources and lesson plans on the important themes of food safety and healthy eating.'
