The Director of the Food Standards Agency Wales (FSAW), Joy Whinney, has welcomed the appointment of two new members to the independent Welsh Food Advisory Committee (WFAC).
WFAC is made up of a Board member of the Food Standards Agency, appointed by the National Assembly for Wales, and independent experts who are selected for their experience and practical knowledge of areas such as nutrition, agriculture, food-related science and consumer interests.
The two new members are:
Mrs Whinney said: 'These new appointments will ensure that WFAC continues to comprise individuals with a wide range of food-related backgrounds and in depth knowledge. Drawing on this wide range of experience guarantees that thorough and well-considered advice on every aspect of food is given to the Agency by the Committee.'
The new members will attend their first WFAC meeting in Abergavenny in September.
Ann Hemingway, Chair of WFAC, thanked the outgoing members – David Smith and Gilli Cliff – founder members of the Committee, for their hard work and dedication.
Mrs Hemingway added that the incoming members would help consolidate the excellent work that has been done by their predecessors. She said 'The Committee has mapped out a challenging programme and I look forward to pursuing this in the coming months.'
Back to topWFAC was established in 2000 to provide independent advice on food issues that relate to Wales. WFAC members are appointed by the Welsh Assembly Government to provide a wide range of expertise, experience and practical knowledge.
The Committee works closely with the FSA, both in Wales and elsewhere, and supports the Agency's objectives of putting consumers first; being open and accessible and being an independent voice.

Ms Kate Hovers
Brecon-based Ms Hovers, is a locum and Consultant Veterinary Surgeon. She has been a representative to the British Veterinary Association Council since 1995, and is also a past President of the Sheep Veterinary Society and member of the National Sheep Association. Ms Hovers runs a small sheep farm.
Mr Andrew Johnson
Mr Johnson has extensive knowledge of the food industry with over 18 years in retail buying for two leading supermarkets. He has been involved in the development of strategies to improve the supply chain, animal welfare standards and consumer choice. Based in Cardiff, Andrew is currently dividing his time between caring for his school age daughter and part time consultancy work in the fresh food industry.
