Food Standards Agency Wales launches its second AFAL award

Monday 1 November 2004

Ref: WA 36/O4CK

Following the success of its 2004 AFAL (Awards For Food Action Locally) Scheme, Food Standards Agency Wales is now launching the awards for 2005. As previously, the awards will recognise individual or team contributions to local nutrition initiatives that have made a positive impact on the diet or eating habits of residents in the communities they serve.

The awards are open to all individuals or organisations responsible for initiating and directing activities or events in Wales that are aimed at improving the diet of their local community. This includes key players across all sectors, such as the national public health service, local health boards, the education sector, community and voluntary workers, local authorities, retailers and food producers etc. who are working to make an impact at the community level.

In announcing the launch of the awards, Professor Robert Pickard, Director General of the British Nutrition Foundation, member of the Welsh Food Advisory Committee for FSA Wales and a member of the 2004 AFAL judging panel commented, 'Last year there was a high level of interest in the awards, with over 70 entries across the five category groups. All were of a high calibre, and made the judging a difficult process. These winners each demonstrated how hard work, commitment and enthusiasm had helped to promote better diets in their community. We are committed to rerunning the AFAL awards for 2005 and are now seeking nominations. These may be peer-nominations, self-nominations or nominations from members of the communities directly benefiting from the activities concerned.'

He concluded, 'We are particularly keen to see nominations relating to activities being undertaken in the more disadvantaged and vulnerable communities in Wales where schemes to improve diet are most needed. We are also keen to receive nominations from projects demonstrating added value with limited funds. These awards will highlight the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm exhibited by those engaged in promoting better diets at the local level, and will enable Food Standards Agency Wales to promote best practice and encourage others to undertake similar awareness raising activities.'

The winners in each category will receive £2000 for investment into the healthy eating initiative in question, a celebratory fruit bowl and a certificate, with runners-up receiving £1000, as well as the celebratory fruit bowl and a certificate. Finalists will be invited to make a presentation about their activities at a conference in May, where the winners will be then be announced and awards presented.
