Healthy eating recipes to help over 65’s on show at campaign launch.

Ref: WA35/02KC

The Food Standards Agency Wales will be cooking up its recipe for healthy eating among the over 65’s at Colwyn Bay next week. Cookery demonstrations and a local community dietician will be on hand to share the secrets of sensible winter eating at the launch of the National Assembly for Wales’ Keep Well This Winter campaign at Eirlas Park Leisure Centre on Wednesday (2 October).

Food Standards Agency Advisory Committee Wales member Dilwen Phillips will be cooking up a feast during live cookery demonstrations from the Agency’s giant exhibition trailer, located in the Leisure Centre car park. Community dietician Teresa Owen will also be on hand to answer questions and explain how healthy eating plays an important role in the health of older people, particularly during the colder, winter months.

The FSA events follow the official launch of the 2002/03 Keep Well This Winter campaign by Assembly Health Minister Jane Hutt (10.30am, the Holst Suite, Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre). The Minister will then tour exhibition stands and view an exercise demonstration prior to the FSA’s events getting underway at approximately 10:55am.

Jayne Griffiths, an executive officer for FSA Wales, said: “FSA Wales is proud to be involved in the Keep Well This Winter campaign again this year. Spreading the message about healthy eating to older people is particularly important during the winter, when people can be at their most vulnerable to illness.

“This launch is the first of a series of events planned by the Agency as part of our commitment to the KWTW campaign. We are looking forward to more cookery demonstrations across the country, and seeing the results of our grants scheme that encourages community and voluntary groups to apply for funding towards healthy eating events.”

The National Assembly for Wales’ key partners in the Keep Well This Winter campaign are: Age Concern Cymru; Care and Repair Cymru; the Energy Saving Trust; the Food Standards Agency Wales; National Energy Action; the Royal National Institute for the Blind and the Wales Youth Agency. NHD Direct Wales is running the Keep Well This Winter website and provides a telephone information service to support the campaign. The campaign is further supported by the National Association of Citizens’ Advice Bureaux and the Welsh Local Government Association.
