A study into the reasons why some school children start the day without breakfast - and ways to overcome the problem - has netted a Port Talbot school first prize in a Food Standards Agency Wales competition.
Year 10 and 11 pupils at Dyffryn School, Margam will be presented with their prize of £5,000 in vouchers at the school this Friday (18 October). The presentation will be made by Mrs Dilwen Phillips, a competition judge and member of the Food Standards Agency’s Advisory Committee for Wales.
The Agency in Wales’ competition required schools to submit a project on healthy eating, using the British Nutrition Foundation’s Interactive Food Facts CD-Rom in its development. The Agency distributed the CD-Rom to every secondary school in Wales late last year.
Competition winners Dyffryn School chose to look at the reasons behind children skipping their morning meal, and assessed how this situation could be changed. Fellow pupils, teachers and canteen staff were questioned as part of an investigation into alternative products and sales outlets. The team also ran competitions within the school to determine slogans and packaging, and looked at the provision of taster sessions as part of its product marketing strategy.
Speaking before the presentation, Hilary Neathey, a Higher Executive Officer for the Food Standards Agency Wales said: 'Dyffryn School’s project was built on a foundation of excellent research that looked at a number of techniques and resources. It was clear that this really was a team effort, and proved an interesting read. I hope that the pupils of Dyffryn School enjoy their prize, and take satisfaction from the knowledge that they have produced a project with the potential to inspire and stimulate others.'
The prize presentation of £5,000 in Curry’s vouchers will take place at Dyffryn School, Bertha Road, Margam at 11am this Friday, 18 October. To attend the event, please contact the press office on 029 20 678915/6.
