Children, young mums and senior citizens are all in for some interactive food fun next week when the Agency's brings its exhibition resource to Wrexham.

Cookery demonstrations, games and advice on healthy eating are on offer throughout from Monday to Friday next week, and everyone is invited.

Hundreds of visitors from local groups are expected to attend special events featuring quizzes, games, talks and cookery demonstrations. Others not directly invited to these events but with an interest in food can also hop on board the giant trailer, during the special 'open' sessions being held in the grounds of Ysgol Bryn Alyn, Gwersyllt.

The fun starts on Monday when more than 150 year eight Ysgol Bryn Alyn children will be taking part in a food safety and nutrition quiz, and trying their luck on the interactive computer games.

On Tuesday morning, some 126 year nine children will hear how healthy eating can boost brain power and find out more about practical cooking skills from the Food Standards Agency’s chef, Dilwen Phillips. Mrs Phillips is a member of the Agency’s Advisory Committee for Wales.

On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, some children will be bringing their grandparents to school to join in the fun. A group of locally based over 65's have been invited to the Agency stand to watch Dilwen Phillips cook up a winter warmer that can help people keep warm and healthy during the colder months. This event coincides with the National Assembly for Wales' Keep Well This Winter campaign, which aims to help the over 65's keep warm, well and safe. The Agency leads on healthy eating for the KWTW campaign.

Later on Tuesday afternoon, the stand will be open to all - from members of the general public to health professionals and environmental health officers. The stand will be open from 3.30pm to 5pm, and a community dietician will be on hand to answer any questions about diet and nutrition.

Following the over 65's events on Wednesday morning, the younger generation will be back on board the trailer for an afternoon of special events for Sure Start young mums and toddlers. There will be a practical cookery demonstration, and an opportunity to learn about the benefits of a balanced diet for mum and child from a local community dietician.

On Thursday morning, more than 100 children from Ysgol Bryn Alyn feeder schools will be joining Agency staff to take part in the food safety and nutrition quiz and try the interactive games. In the afternoon, GCSE pupils in years 10 and 11 will tour the trailer before settling down to a talk and cookery demonstration from a Sure Start co-ordinator.

On Friday morning, the tour draws to a close with another 80 junior pupils from Ysgol Bryn Alyn feeder schools. This will be followed by a final group of Bryn Alyn year 11 pupils, who will hear a talk based on healthy eating and sport.

Bryan Pay, an executive officer for the Food Standards Agency Wales, said: 'I am very excited about our visit to Wrexham, as it allows us to bring our healthy eating message to a very wide audience. I look forward to a busy and rewarding week.

'I am confident that our games, quizzes, demonstrations and talks will lead to greater understanding of nutritional needs, and raise enthusiasm about cooking and diet. After all, the benefits of a healthy diet are available to all and with just a little effort, can easily be achieved.'
