Children at a school based in Ely, Cardiff are set to benefit two-fold thanks to their Head teacher’s commitment to teaching food safety.
Mrs Jennifer Ingram from Hywel Dda Junior School, Cambria Road, Ely has become one of the first ten teachers in Wales to complete all the modules in the Teaching Food Safety in Schools CD-Rom and identify how the skills she has learned will be used in the classroom. Her efforts will be recognised and rewarded in a presentation in Cardiff.
In addition to gaining from Mrs Ingram’s new-found knowledge, the school and its pupils will benefit from a £500 store voucher to be spent on electronic equipment of their choice. The voucher will be presented to Mrs Ingram at a special award event at Mount Stuart Square School, Cardiff Bay today (Thursday, 23 May). She will also receive a £500 voucher for her personal use.
Promoted jointly by the Food Standards Agency Wales and the British Nutrition Foundation, Teaching Food Safety covers a wide range of topics including food hygiene, food labelling, allergies and health. The CD-Rom has been distributed to every primary school in Wales.
Joy Whinney, FSA Wales Director will present the award and said: 'I am delighted to present Mrs Ingram with her prizes, in recognition of her commitment to spreading the food safety message to her pupils.
'The Food Standards Agency Wales is committed to reducing food borne illness and educating our young people is an important step towards that goal. Their understanding of the key issues can only help prevent food poisoning incidents, to which children are particularly susceptible.'
A presentation will be made to Mrs Ingram at 11.15 am on the Food Standards Agency Wales’ new exhibition stand, which will be at Mount Stuart Square Primary School all day. Members of the press and media are very welcome to attend, but must notify the Agency in advance to allow access to the school grounds. Photos will also be distributed after the event.
