Pantomime fun at the National Eisteddfod

Thursday 2 August 2001

Cinderella and her Ugly Sister will be leading the fight against salmonella, listeria and food poisoning at next week's National Eisteddfod in a bid to promote understanding of food safety.

Excellent photo and filming opportunities

The entertainment will be courtesy of the Food Standards Agency Wales: "Wacky Kitchen" pantomime. Characters Sal (salmonella) and Giene (hygiene) will be helping Cinders see the error of her ways every day at stands 616 and 617.

The action begins with Cinderella looking forward to the Royal ball later that evening. Her Ugly Sister wants dinner cooked before she can go to the palace, but our heroine finds that the kitchen is laden with bacteria, listeria, E- coli and their equally unwelcome friends. Her sister is no help and the food in the fridge and cupboards is poorly stored, low in nutritional content and often out of date. Can Cinderella clean up, prevent food poisoning and get to the ball on time?

One of the FSA's key priorities is to reduce food-borne illness by 20 per cent within five years, by improving food safety right through the food chain. Other features of the FSA stand include the bubbles and slime game based on snakes and ladders. Progression in this giant-sized game depends on understanding and adhering to basic good food hygiene and preparation procedures.

Alwyn Williams, who will be manning the FSA Wales stand said: "Educating and reminding people about food safety is an important step in helping to prevent food poisoning incidents, and the Wacky Kitchen pantomime promotes understanding in an entertaining way. I hope that everyone who visits our stand to see the performances is reminded to reassess their own food preparation habits and prevent the misery of food poisoning."

The FSA Wales will be at the National Eisteddfod in partnership with the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS). The PHLS stand features a "Whodunnit" game where participants have to find the bug responsible for causing illness.
