Consumers and interested organisations will get the chance to air their views and put questions on food related matters to the Food Standards Agency next week, when it hosts an open forum at the Royal Welsh Show.
The meeting will be held at 3pm on Tuesday 25th July, at the National Assembly Pavilion. Ann Hemingway, Chair of the Food Standards Agency Advisory Committee for Wales will be joined by a panel of experts reflecting the key themes of nutrition, food safety and food hygiene. Geoffrey Podger, Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency and Joy Whinney, Director, Food Standards Agency Wales will also be present.
The event will be opened by Jane Hutt, AM, Assembly Secretary for Health and Social Services, and following brief introductions from the panel, the audience will be invited to have their say, during a question and answer session.
The Food Standards Agency Wales also shares a stand at the showground with the National Assembly?s Health Promotion Division this year. Together they are putting across important food safety and nutrition messages in a lively and accessible way with the help of Cinderella and her Ugly Sister; new teaching resources "Aliens in our food" and "Safe T and the H Squad"; plus a range of other interactive attractions. All this and more can be experienced on Stand 322, Avenue D.
Ann Hemingway, Chair of the Food Standards Agency Advisory Committee for Wales said "The open forum is an opportunity for us to explain what the Food Standards Agency is all about and, more particularly, the role, aims and objectives of the Agency in Wales and Advisory Committee for Wales. It is clear that in tackling food poisoning and promoting a healthy diet, the Food Standards Agency will need to work in partnership with many organisations, and I am pleased to have colleagues from the National Assembly, PHLS and Local Government on the panel with me today"
Geoffrey Podger, Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency said "Our aim is to improve the health of the public in relation to food; to raise consumer?s confidence in food and gain their trust by our actions. I am delighted to have been asked to participate in one of the major events in the Welsh calendar"
Notes for Editors
The Royal Welsh Show takes place 24 ? 27 July 2000 at Builth Wells.
The Food Standards Agency Wales is based in Southgate House Cardiff.
The panel of experts comprise Dr Claire Paisley, a nutritionist with the National Assembly for Wales; Dr Roland Salmon, a consultant epidemiologist with the Public Health Laboratory Service; and Allan Davies, Director of Environmental Services with Monmouthshire County Council.
Cinderella and her Ugly Sister take centre stage with 10 performances a day, in English and Welsh, at the FSA Wales/NAW Health Promotion Division stand. The 15 minute pantomime focuses on Cinderella, who is told she cannot go to the ball until she has cooked dinner, and her Ugly sister, aided and abetted by Bacs the Bug, Cookie the Rat and the Fairy Godmother. Cinders knows she shouldn?t prepare food in such an unhygienic kitchen and calls on her fairy godmother and Bacs to get the job done.
