Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, Richard Lochhead, met FSA Chair, Lord Jeff Rooker and Charles Milne, Director of FSA in Scotland along with key industry representatives, the Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers and the British Meat Producers Association, to discuss modernisation of meat official controls and charging proposals for official controls.
Lord Rooker said: 'I welcome the opportunity for Government and industry to have these discussions in Scotland and am keen to ensure constructive dialogue going forward on these high priority issues.
The FSA recognises the importance of Scotland’s livestock rearing and meat processing sectors and the challenges faced by industry. I am encouraged that these joint discussions will help us develop our policy in these areas and continue to protect the interests of consumers.'
Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said:
'This meeting to discuss how we secure the long overdue modernisation of the EU meat hygiene and transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) regimes to provide the right public health framework was constructive and helpful. We are now seeking an early meeting with the new EU Commissioner to take this forward. All parties agreed that by working in partnership at domestic and EU level we stand a much better chance of succeeding in driving out unnecessary and costly regulatory measures.'
