New information pack for childminders launched

Thursday 17 July 2008

The Food Standards Agency Scotland (FSAS) has joined forces with the Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) and the Care Commission (CC) to develop an information pack for childminders throughout Scotland.

The pack provides a selection of useful Food Standards Agency booklets, pamphlets & materials, primarily relating to food safety. These are contained within a folder which gives a brief summary of relevant organisations such as the CC and SCMA.

Since 2006, childminders have had to comply with food hygiene legislation and have effectively become food businesses. The information pack was developed, in partnership with CC & SCMA, to provide childminders with a single source of information to help them understand their responsibilities.

Over 5500 copies have been distributed to all registered childminders in Scotland, aiming to raise their awareness of topics such as good food hygiene and food labelling.

Assistant Director of FSA Scotland, Lydia Wilkie, said: 'FSA Scotland is delighted to have worked in partnership with SCMA and CC to produce this pack, which provides valuable information for those caring for children across Scotland.'

Scottish Childminding Association spokesperson, Maggie Simpson said:

'SCMA has long understood and communicated the importance of nutritional care and food safety for children. It made perfect sense to team up with FSA Scotland and the Care Commission to develop this food information pack. By keeping Scotland’s child minders up to date with food safety and nutrition advice, we can pave the way to a healthy start in life for minded children.'

Director of Children’s Services Regulation in the Care Commission, Ronnie Hill, said:

'The Care Commission is happy to endorse this pack as it supports the Scottish Government’s National Care Standards for Early Education and Day Care. We have worked closely with FSA Scotland and SCMA to produce the pack and ensure all registered child minders across Scotland receive a copy. We hope that childminders will also share the information in the pack with the parents of children using their service.'

Packs can be obtained from the Food Standards Agency Scotland, tel: 01224 285100.

Notes to editors

1. The 'Food Safety Information Pack for Childminders in Scotland’ pack is an A4 folder giving a brief background and contact details for relevant organisations such as Care Commission and the Scottish Childminding Association. It contains the following FSA materials: ‘Ten Tips for Food Safety’, ‘How to store food safely in your fridge’, ‘Food Labels - More informed choices’, ‘Food allergy – How to avoid certain foods’, 'feeding your toddler'; and a 'Safe Fridge Storage' fridge magnet.

2. The pack has been distributed to over 5500 registered childminders across Scotland. The pack design allows for the contents to be updated as necessary and periodically re-issued as new childminders join the register.

3. The FSA worked with the Care Commission and the Scottish Childminding Association to produce the pack. The pack is endorsed by CC as it supports the Scottish Government’s National Care Standards for Early Education and Day Care. SCMA also endorse the pack, as well as supporting the Scottish Government’s Nutritional Guidelines for Early Years.
