FSA Scotland Launches 'What's Cooking?' Guide for Schools and Communities

Tuesday 30 October 2007

The Food Standards Agency Scotland has launching a 'What's Cooking?' guide to help people setup and run school and community food clubs.

The 'What's Cooking?' guide will be issued to schools and other stakeholders, including local authorities in Scotland.

This guide will help participants plan and prepare balanced meals, read and understand food labels, be creative in cooking food, budget for food and learn basic food hygiene skills.

The guide can be used in a variety of settings including schools, community, voluntary and social care, and clubs can be run by all kinds of people from student helpers, parents and carers to youth leaders and community volunteers.

FSA Scotland Assistant Director, Lydia Wilkie said: 'We have produced the "What's Cooking?" guide to encourage people to setup and run school and community food clubs. The guide is designed to help people learn how to cook healthy and safe food.

'This is a fun and useful way of making it easy for people to understand how eating the right amount and types of food can help them maintain a healthy, balanced diet.'

To find out more about the 'What's Cooking?' project, please contact Caroline Thomson, Policy Officer, FSAS on 01224 285146 or email: caroline.thomson@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk .

Notes to editors

In Scotland, the Food Standards Agency has worked in collaboration with the Scottish Government, representatives from industry and Scottish Local Authorities on the development of the guide.

Earlier this year (January-April 2007), the guide was piloted in four Scottish local authorities: Aberdeen City, Falkirk, Perth & Kinross and Renfrewshire and independently evaluated.
