Food Standards Agency Scotland offers £70,000 to Scottish food hygiene initiatives

Wednesday 5 November 2003

Ref: 23/03

The Food Standards Agency Scotland (FSAS) has set aside £70,000 to support key food hygiene initiatives across Scotland.

Seven grants, each worth £10,000, will be awarded locally in a bid to develop new, or add value to already existing, projects, helping to raise awareness of the essential messages underpinning the Agency's national Food Hygiene Campaign.

The campaign aims to improve hygiene standards across the UK and bring about a 20% reduction in food poisoning cases by 2006.

Bill Adamson, Local Authority Liaison Branch Head, Food Standards Agency Scotland, said: 'These grants seek to build on the significant food hygiene promotion work already being carried out across the country on a local level as well as encouraging partnership working.

'Each grant will go a long way to help move forward worthy initiatives that will reinforce key food hygiene messages to the public, businesses and organisations alike.'

Local authorities and food liaison groups throughout Scotland are asked to submit a brief project plan by 30 January 2004 to the FSAS.

Each proposal will be judged by a panel comprising representatives from the FSA, alongside key stakeholders in February 2004.

A number of project criteria will be considered including: overall objectives; scope and coverage of the initiative; role of partnership working and innovation and creativity.

Each successful organisation will be awarded 75% funding initially, with the remaining 25% following an evaluation of the project itself.
