Food Survey Information Sheet 07/06
Dioxins and PCBs were analysed in 165 samples of processed fish and fish products purchased in the UK. The main purpose of the survey was to allow the dietary intake of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs from processed fish and fish products to be estimated. The current survey complements a recent survey for dioxins and PCBs in wild and farmed fish and shellfish (Food Standards Agencys Food Survey Information Sheet No 03/06).
Concentrations of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs were below relevant EU regulatory limits in all of the samples analysed, with higher concentrations being found in products based on oily fish or crab. Intake calculations indicate that there is no need to make any change to the Agencys current advice on fish consumption.
The samples analysed covered a wide range of fish and shellfish related products including canned fish and shellfish, processed fish (smoked and dried), fish fingers, prepared fish meals, fish roe, enrobed products such as calamari and fish balls, pastes and pâtés and seafood sticks.
Concentrations of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs were below relevant EU regulatory limits in all of the samples analysed. Total TEQ concentrations were found to be in the range 0.01 - 3.17 ng WHO-TEQ/kg fresh weight.
