Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in processed fish and fish products

Thursday 4 May 2006

Food Survey Information Sheet 07/06

Summary

Dioxins and PCBs were analysed in 165 samples of processed fish and fish products purchased in the UK. The main purpose of the survey was to allow the dietary intake of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs from processed fish and fish products to be estimated. The current survey complements a recent survey for dioxins and PCBs in wild and farmed fish and shellfish (Food Standards Agencys Food Survey Information Sheet No 03/06).

Concentrations of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs were below relevant EU regulatory limits in all of the samples analysed, with higher concentrations being found in products based on oily fish or crab. Intake calculations indicate that there is no need to make any change to the Agencys current advice on fish consumption.
