Listen to this siteThe Agency offers up to three postgraduate scholarships each year in defined areas of applied science, including the social sciences, to help provide the next generation of scientists with research skills in areas relevant to our future needs.
Scholarships may be at either Doctoral or research Masters level. The main criteria on which we assess proposals are the quality of training provided, scientific quality and relevance to the Agency's policies. Preference is also given to proposals expected to lead to practical outcomes that benefit consumers.
Applications for research scholarships starting in October 2009 are invited in the following areas:
In the first area (ref: Food Hygiene), we particularly welcome proposals on predictive modelling of the growth of foodborne pathogens such as listeria monocytogenes and salmonella following sublethal heat treatment.
In the second area (ref: Social Science), we would welcome proposals which make use of innovative research and analysis techniques (in combination with more traditional techniques) relevant to food and behavioural change (e.g. food poverty, domestic hygiene, influences on food purchasing decisions) in a changing economic climate.
Proposals are invited from academic and research institutions in the UK. Applications from prospective scholars will not be accepted, although institutions may nominate a scholar in their applications. Proposals should be within the scope of Agency research programmes and relevant to the UK.
Guidance notes, application forms for submitting proposals are available at the links below. The closing date for applications is 31 March 2009.
