This research project aims to investigate the possibility of enabling members of the public to obtain individual dose assessments.
Study Duration : April 2002 to March 2004
The objectives of the project are to:
This pilot study was carried out by holding a small number of focus group meetings based around two nuclear sites in England. The study found that it was possible to enable members of the public to obtain information about their radiation doses. However, obtaining the necessary data and preparing the dose information would be costly and time consuming. Most people would not feel the need to seek out information on what their radiation doses are even if living near a nuclear site, but there was support for such information being available for those few people that might want it. Radiation doses would need to be estimated for all sources and put into context in terms of what is considered 'safe' limits and exposure elsewhere. When presenting information to the public it is important that trials are held to ensure that it is meeting people's needs and is clearly understood.
This information will be used by the Agency to inform communication of the results of dose assessments to consumers.
The final report is available from the FSA Library and Information centre.
