This research project will undertake a literature review of the effect of iodine's chemical form on its transfer through the environment and into food.

Background

To assess the dose received by consumers, the Food Standards Agency needs to be able to be able to calculate concentrations of radioactive iodine in foods as a result of atmospheric discharges. The transfer of iodine through the environment and into food depends on the chemical form (species) in which it was discharged.

Research Approach

This project has reviewed the literature on the effect of chemical form on the transfer of iodine .

Results and findings

This project has reviewed the literature on the effect of chemical form on the transfer of iodine and has provided information that will be used in the Agency�s models for assessing the impact of discharges of radioactivity on consumer intake of selected foods.
