This research project aims to examine whether the analytical data obtained by contractors for the Phytoestrogens Research Programme is precise and consistent.
Study Duration : April 2001 to March 2003
Contractor : Institute of Food Research
The ability to accurately measure phytoestrogens in food and biological samples is vital to be able to assess the human exposure and health effects of these compounds. This project will involve an inter-laboratory Quality Assurance Scheme to examine whether the analytical data obtained by contractors undertaking scientific research for the FSA's Phytoestrogens Research Programme is precise and consistent. International laboratories will also be able to participate in the scheme.
Stable triply labelled ( 13 C) isoflavone standards will be provided for participants to use as an internal quality control. Samples of soy infant formula, urine and plasma containing isoflavones will be issued for four rounds of analysis. Participants will return the results for statistical evaluation and a report will be issued for each round of testing. When all four rounds have been completed, the performance of the laboratories will be correlated and the methods of analysis used will be assessed.
