This research project aims to provide a quality assurance analysis of the main methods currently used to measure phytoestrogens in food.
Study Duration : April 1997 to March 1999
Contractor : Central Science Laboratory
It is important to be able to accurately measure phytoestrogens in food and biological samples to allow assessment of human exposure to these compounds. This project aims to provide a quality assurance (QA) scheme for analysis of the main methods currently used to measure phytoestrogens in food and urine.
The accuracy and reproducibility of the different methods used to measure phytoestrogens will be determined by assessing the ability of 6 laboratories involved in the Phytoestrogens Research Programme to analyse two phytoestrogens (i.e. genistein and daidzein) in soya flour and urine samples distributed to them.
The laboratories' results were found to be reliable and reproducible, although urine analysis produced greater variability in results than soya flour analysis. Genistein was more difficult to measure than daidzein.
The results of this project were evaluated by the Committee on Toxicity (COT) as part of its review on phytoestrogens and health .
Final report is available from the FSA Library and Information centre.
