This research project aims to review the Phytoestrogens Research Programme and conduct a survey of phytoestrogen research worldwide.

Background

This project will formally review the Phytoestrogens Research Programme and survey phytoestrogen research worldwide.

Research Approach

A survey of worldwide phytoestrogen research will be conducted by postal and/or email questionnaire.

Results and findings

Details of unpublished and ongoing phytoestrogens research projects were received from over 140 different laboratories worldwide. The research covered six main areas of phytoestrogen investigation:

For each category, key areas of further work for the Agency's phytoestrogens research programme were identified. Overall, the programme was found to represent a Network of Excellence in terms of global research into phytoestrogens.

The results of this project were evaluated by the Committee on Toxicity (COT) as part of its review on phytoestrogens and health .
