This research project aims to produce analytical standards for the accurate measurement of phytoestrogens in food.
Study Duration : December 1997 to May 2002
Contractor : MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit
The ability to accurately measure phytoestrogens in food as well as in samples of blood and urine is vital to be able to assess human exposure to these compounds. However, such analysis is critically dependent on the availability of pure, chemically stable labelled analytical standards for phytoestrogens. However, the range and availability of these materials is limited. Therefore this project will develop methods for the preparation of analytical standards for phytoestrogens.
Labelled ( 13 C labels) phytoestrogens will be prepared by growing soya beans and linseed in 13 CO 2 -enriched air. The phytoestrogens produced by these plants will contain 13 C instead of 12 C. The labelled phytoestrogens will be extracted from the plants and purified for use in analytical studies.
This project developed methods for the preparation 13 C labelled analytical standards for phytoestrogens.
