This research project aims to find up-to-date information on the analytical techniques used to investigate and ensure the food safety of GM foods and products by the biotechnology and novel foods industry.
Study Duration : April 1999 to August 2001
There have been rapid changes occurring in the methods of food production in relation to whole food and food components produced using GM technology. This project is therefore aimed at providing the Agency with up-to-date information on the techniques in use and being developed to investigate and ensure the food safety of GM foods and products.
The project is gathering the information using a questionnaire that has been sent to up to 50 representatives of biotechnology and novel foods industries.
The principle aim of this project was to provide an overview of the methods currently used in the safety evaluation of GM food. To achieve this the contractors conducted a literature survey and database search to identify the techniques in use at the time and then consulted with industry. A questionnaire was used to determine the approaches and techniques being developed to investigate GM food safety and proposed post market monitoring for potential long term health effects.
