Study Duration : March 2008 to September 2008
Contractor : Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Department of Food and Environmental Safety
The current focus of the Agency’s on-farm work to reduce campylobacter in UK chicken is a campaign to improve biosecurity on poultry farms. However, biosecurity alone is unlikely to control campylobacter and there is a need to fund research into other additional interventions. A critical review of available and potential interventions and strategies to reduce campylobacter on poultry farms will enable the Agency to prioritise its funding in this area and inform our campylobacter control strategy.
An international review team of experts will assess the available literature gathered from academic/industry contacts worldwide. Opinion and advice will also be obtained from both researchers and representatives of the poultry production and processing industries. The review team will collate the available data and analyse this in terms of feasibility and cost-effectiveness of interventions, especially measured against a reduction in campylobacter levels on poultry at retail. A report will then be delivered with evidence-based recommendations for industry uptake and future research requirements.
