B15019: Review of current information on campylobacter in poultry other than chicken and how this may contribute to human cases

Thursday 31 August 2006

This research project is a literature review study to investigate the incidence of campylobacter in poultry other than chicken, at retail. Also the degree of overlap of human campylobacter subtypes with subtypes found in poultry other than chicken.

Study Duration : August 2006 to April 2007

Contractor : ADAS

Background

Poultry is thought to be a major source of campylobacters. Campylobacter infection is the most common cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis in the UK. However, most studies have investigated the incidence of contamination in chicken only. Therefore, there is a need to consider other poultry species such as turkey, goose, duck, quail, guinea fowl and game birds, as consumption of these species is increasing in the UK.

Research Approach

A literature review of internationally published and unpublished data on the prevalence of campylobacters in poultry other than chicken. This will include prevalence in the slaughterhouse and at retail sale. The degree of overlap between strains from poultry sources and serotypes identified in case control/outbreak data held by the Health Protection Agency, will be assessed and used to prepare a risk assessment of the occurrence of human Campylobacter infection.
