This research project investigates the most appropriate ways of delivering food hygiene and safety messages in schools.
Study Duration : March 2004 to December 2005
Contractor : University of Surrey
This project aimed to review and evaluate sources of food hygiene related information available to schools and determine which of these are most effective at improving food hygiene related knowledge and behaviours of pupils.
This study identified gaps in current provision of food hygiene education and effective ways of influencing the attitudes and behaviour of young people. The project provides information on the barriers that young people face to performing appropriate hygiene related behaviours and identified practical actions that the Agency can take to improve the knowledge of young people and bring about desired changes in behaviour. In doing so this study will support the Agency's strategic target of reducing the incidence of foodborne disease.
This study identified a number of ways in which the Agency could support and improve the teaching of food hygiene in schools, including:
