Listen to this siteThe Food Standards Agency in Wales (which receives its funding from the Welsh Assembly Government) does not generally engage in the direct commissioning of research. FSA Wales seeks to ensure that Welsh issues are addressed in the context of the Food Standards Agency's UK-wide research and surveillance programme.
In practical terms Wales concentrates on funding surveillance activity on a range of issues within Wales - those undertaken to date have related mainly to activity in support of the nutrition strategy for Wales.
Back to topIn developing a nutrition strategy tailored to the needs of Wales, children and young people have been identified as a priority group for achieving improvements in diets. In 2001 FSA Wales let a contract to evaluate the effectiveness of a specific intervention programme devised by Bangor University 'Food Dudes' created to increase children's consumption of fruit and vegetables. The objectives of the project were to (1) establish baseline fruit and vegetables consumption in primary /junior school aged children; (2) assess changes in consumption during the intervention phase, and (3) evaluate the short and long term efficacy of the intervention programme.
The provisional findings from this study demonstrate that the intervention does have an immediate and beneficial impact on the quantity of fruit and vegetables consumed by children participating in the pilot. The study also involves follow up investigations later this year to ascertain the extent to which these improvements are sustainable over time. The final report will be published after these additional measures have been undertaken.
Back to topFSA Wales also funds additional sampling in the Food Standards Agency's UK-wide studies such as the Promotion of Foods to Children qualitative research study and the LIDNS survey.
