This research project will determine the concentration of environmental contaminants in Scottish shellfish. The contaminants will include trace metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides , polychlorinated biphenyls and tetrabromobisphenol A.
Study Duration : December 2005 – September 2006.
Contractor : Fisheries Research Services and Central Science Laboratories.
In support of the requirements for surveilance of chemical contaminants in shellfish under Commission Regulation (EC) 466/2001 and the Shellfish Hygiene Directive 91/492/EEC, mussels (Mytilus edulis) , oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and scallops (Pecten maximus) will be sampled from a variety of selected inshore and offshore harvesting areas representative of shellfish production in Scotland. The tissues will be analysed for concentrations of environmental contaminants, including trace metals, PAHs, CBs, dioxin and non dioxin-like PCBs, OCPs and TBBPA.
Shellfish will be harvested from areas representative of Scottish shellfish production in January to March, when the lipid content is at a maximum and contamination level at its highest. The tissues will be analysed for concentrations of environmental contaminants, including trace metals, PAHs, CBs, dioxin and non dioxin-like PCBs, OCPs and TBBPA. All analytical methods are quality controlled and UKAS accredited.
