Friday 24 November 2006

The study will provide a systematic and rigorous national assessment of access to healthy food across Scotland.

Study Duration : February 2005 to November 2007

Contractor : Centre for the Study of Retailing in Scotland, The University of Edinburgh

Background

This study on the availability of an affordable healthy food shopping basket was commissioned by the Food Standards Agency Scotland and undertaken between 2005 and 2007 by the Centre for the Study of Retailing in Scotland.

Research Approach

A database of 5923 food outlets in Scotland was constructed and used for mapping and analysis using GIS techniques. A Healthy Eating Indicator Shopping Basket (HEISB) of 35 indicator healthy foods was designed to investigate the availability and cost of healthy foods and was employed in 9 sample areas (sentinels) related to axes of urban-rural situation and affluent-deprived conditions. Detailed data were collected from 466 shops in these sentinels.
