This research project aims to monitor algal toxins present in shellfish in Scotland.

This project monitors DSP (Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison), ASP (Amnesic Shellfish Poison) and PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poison) present in shellfish. The monitoring of algal toxins is very important. If contaminated shellfish are eaten effects can range from tingling and numbness to motor incoordination, gastro-enteritis, neurological disorders and, in some severe instances, death. The specific symptoms depends on the toxin present in the shellfish. DSP, ASP & PSP have been detected in shellfish from Scotland, with illnesses from both diarrhetic and paralytic shellfish poisons recorded. Monitoring for these toxins is a statutory requirement under EEC Directive 91/492/EEC and Statutory Instrument 1998 No 994 ‘The Food Safety (Fishery Products and Live Shellfish) (Hygiene) Regulations 1998’.
The shellfish monitoring programme is operated in Scotland by the Food Standards Agency, Scotland (FSAS) to comply with the requirements of the shellfish hygiene directive, 91/492/EEC, and with current UK legislation, The Food Safety (Fishery Products and Live Shellfish) (Hygiene) regulations 1998, as amended.
Monitoring continues to be carried out under project number S02007.
The results of this monitoring have been reported annually and each report (2002, 2003 and 2004) is available from the Agency's library.
