This research project aims to ensure that samples of mollusc flesh from all Scottish shellfish production areas are analysed for E. coli throughout the year.
Study Duration : November 2000 to November 2004
Contractor : Fisheries Research Services - The Marine Laboratory
EU Directive 91/492/EEC lays down the health conditions for the production and placing on the market of live bivalve molluscs. Under this Directive and associated UK legislation, UK shellfish production areas are classified according to the degree of contamination by the faecal indicator bacterium, Escherichia coli , present in samples of mollusc flesh.
This project ensures that samples of flesh from all Scottish shellfish production areas are analysed throughout the year. The results of these allow the Food Standards Agency Scotland to determine the classification for these areas.
