This research project aims to investigate the epidemiological and microbiological characteristics of cases of campylobacter infection.
Study Duration : December 2002 to November 2003
Contractor : Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health (SCIEH)
This project presents the results from an enhanced statistical analysis of the Scottish data collected in Lothian NHS Board area for the UK-wide Campylobacter Sentinel Surveillance Scheme. The objectives of the study were to describe the epidemiological and microbiological characteristics of cases of campylobacter infection in Lothian NHS Board area between May 2001 and June 2002, document the proportion of cases exposed to selected potential risk factors and compare these proportions to the general population.
The study investigated campylobacter infection in relation to a number of different factors. No single risk factor was identified but rather a number of potential risk factors including; travel outside the UK, drinking bottled water, drinking water from a private supply, and the consumption of some specific foods. The study identified a number of areas of potential research that would further enhance the understanding of the complex epidemiology of campylobacter infection in Scotland.
The final report is available from the Agency's Information Centre.
