This research project aims to provide an up to date underdstanding of the transmission of trichothecene rates to eggs as well as a new method development for trichothecene determination.

Background

A better knowledge and understanding on trichothecene transmission rates to eggs, the form of the compounds present (parent compound, metabolites) and nature of any conjugates is needed. Focus will be placed on deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV), 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-AcDON), 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-AcDON), T2 toxin and HT2 toxin.

The development of a robust method for low level low or sub parts per billion (ppb) determination of deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, T2 toxin, HT2 toxin in eggs will be carried out.

Research Approach

To produce a report reviewing literature transmission of zearalenone (ZON) to eggs, methods of analysis for ZON in eggs, produce final work plan
To complete method development, develop suitable robust method with required detection limits, and produce draft standard operating procedure (SOP) in standardised format
To assess stability of zearalenone and metabolites in eggs during frozen storage.
To complete in-house validation of method
To carry out a trial of the validated method by analysis of twenty samples
