Project details: organic environmental contaminants

Details of Agency-funded projects under the Chemical Contaminants from Food Production research programme (C01).

C01003: Assessment of total oestrogenic environmental contaminants in food with recombinant human receptor systems

This research project aims to investigate the risk of foodborne exposure to environmental pollutants capable of mimicking or modulating the action of natural hormones.

Results available.

C01012: Measuring the bioavailabilty of human dietary intake of PAHs, phthalates and aromatic hydrocarbons

This research project aims to determine the extent that aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalates can be absorbed from food.

C01015: Feasibility of Rapid Detection of some potential food contaminants using MALDI-TOF MS

This research project aims to determine the effectiveness of a rapid method for analysing a range of organic chemicals from the surface of a range of fruit, leafy vegetables, wheat grain or grass.

C01029: Uptake of alkylphenols by crops

This research project aims to examine the potential of detergent residues to enter the food chain following uptake by food crops treated with sludge.

Results available.

C01031: Pilot studies to explore alternative methods for recruitment, collection, storage and management of an archive of breast milk samples

This research project will investigate recruitment of women for providing samples of breast milk, and associated record keeping, sampling, storage and analysis of samples.

C01035: Literature survey for chlorinated and non-chlorinated PAHs and chlorinated and non-chlorinated aliphatic organic compounds in food

This research project aims to provide a review of published data on the occurrence of about 40 organic contaminants in foodstuffs.

C01039: Investigation of the occurrence of polychlorinated naphthalenes and polychlorinated short, medium and long chain paraffins in food

This research project will validate and develop the analytical methods for and investigate the occurrence of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) and polychlorinated short, medium and long chain paraffins (CPs) in various foods.

C01040 Horizon scanning for environmental contaminants

The research project will review methodologies for identifying emerging contaminant threats to food safety.

C01041 Metals and organics in fish and shellfish from inland waterways

This research project will assess the levels of consumption of coarse and game fish and shellfish taken from unmanaged inland UK waterways, particularly in areas of known or suspected contamination.

C01048: Determination of phthalates in foods and establishing methodology to distinguish their source

C02069 Investigation of the formation of PAHs in foods prepared in the home and from catering outlets to determine the effects of frying, grilling, barbecuing, toasting and roasting
