The Food Standards Agency aims to reduce further the risks to consumers from chemical contamination of food. To this end the Agency has several programmes of work, including research on the migration of chemicals from materials and articles in contact with food or drink.
The results of this particular area of work find a range of uses, for example as a sound scientific basis for UK input to international negotiations in the European Union. Controls on chemical migration into food are increasingly being made across the EU.
The Working Party on Materials and Articles in Contact with Food or Drink gives independent advice on this area of the Agency�s research. Membership of this working party includes experts from industry, as well as consumer and regulatory interests, to ensure that work in this research programme relates to current industrial practice. The activities of the Working Party are structured around two meetings a year, in the Spring and Autumn. The Spring meeting reviews research projects in progress, whilst the one in the Autumn considers future research.
This review document provides a full record of the Spring 2005 meeting. It illustrates and provides detailed information on a wide range of topics including: investigating factors that influence chemical migration from packaging; developing test methods; and testing materials used in food contact applications. Projects are awarded to contractors after open competition and are carefully managed to ensure value for money in both the science that they produce and their relevance to the work of the Food Standards Agency.
