Authorisation of Discharges of Radioactive Waste to the Environment

Thursday 27 February 2003

Principles for the assessment of prospective public doses.

The Environment Agencies are responsible for authorising the amount of radioactivity that nuclear sites may discharge into the environment. These Agencies must consult the Food Standards Agency on any proposed authorisation to ensure that the food chain is not threatened.

The document attached below, a combined publication with the Environment Agencies, the National Radiological Protection Board and the Food Standards Agency, sets out the principles which these organisations will follow in assessing the impact of the proposed radioactive discharges on the environment and the food chain in a consistent and transparent way.
