Treatment of bees with oxytetracycline update

Tuesday 22 June 2010

honeycomb with bees

The Food Standards Agency has issued sampling and analysis advice to bee farmers who opted for the European foulbrood treatment regime in 2009, having considered responses to our UK-wide consultation on oxytetracycline (OTC) in honey and following ongoing liaison with Scottish Government, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) and other relevant organisations.

Although FSA toxicological and Scottish Government medical advice does not indicate any food safety concerns at the low (µg/kg) levels anticipated, the FSA also welcomes the additional sampling and testing for OTC residues planned by the VMD under its national statutory scheme.
