Call for research

Thursday 19 August 2010

The Agency has issued three separate research calls to inform its work supporting consumer protection on: additives, E. coli O157 and consumer attitudes.

The first project aims to advance the FSA’s understanding of people’s attitudes and behaviours to food issues. Analysis of existing data should enable researchers to identify gaps in the evidence, which can be used to inform the development of the Food and You survey and the Understanding Society survey.

The Agency is also commissioning a project to develop an analytical method for the detection of sweeteners in food, including saccharin, aspartame and sucralose. The method will be used for routine analysis of additive levels in food to ensure their use is safe.

The final project is being commissioned by the Food Standards Agency in Scotland and is being jointly funded by the FSA and Defra. It aims to review existing methods to control the release of E. coli O157 into faeces and the feasibility of their implementation. E. coli O157 is excreted in the faeces of animals and reducing this will reduce the spread of the pathogen to other animals in the herd, consequently reducing the risk of infection in humans.

More information about these research calls and how to apply can be found via the links below.
