Tackling food fraud is the main topic of discussion this week at an event hosted by the Food Standards Agency and the European Food Law Enforcement Practitioners Forum. You can read the speech that Ian Reynolds, FSA Deputy Chair (pictured), delivered to the conference.
Delegates to the one and a half-day conference, which starts today in Birmingham, will include representatives from most EU enforcement authorities. The event aims to promote joined-up working across Europe on food fraud issues, to share best practice between countries and to raise the general awareness of food fraud so that such crimes can be detected more quickly and tackled more effectively.
David Statham, Head of Consumer Protection and Enforcement at the Food Standards Agency said: 'Where food fraud occurs it could have serious implications for the public. Food fraudsters do not respect national boundaries, so it makes sense for us and other European member states to share our experiences of tackling them. This conference aims to identify the best practice that will help us to be more effective in preventing food fraud which in turn will give people even greater confidence in the food they eat.'
