Tesco and Waitrose recall houmous products

Waitrose and Tesco have recalled some of their own brand houmous products due to the presence of salmonella. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. The Agency has issued two Food Alerts for Information.

Waitrose is also recalling the following products on a precautionary basis:

All date codes up to and including 29 April of:

Waitrose Houmous Reduced Fat 200g
Waitrose Houmous Reduced Fat 300g
Waitrose Greek Dip Selection 400g
Waitrose Houmous Roasted Red Pepper 200g
Waitrose Houmous Lemon and Coriander 200g
Waitrose Houmous Variety 3 x 60g
Waitrose Mini Pots Houmous Reduced Fat 3 x 60g
Waitrose Supreme Houmous 170g
Waitrose Houmous Cannellini Bean & Lime 200g
Waitrose Houmous Butter Bean & Garlic 200g
Waitrose Houmous Slow Roasted Tomato 200g

No other Waitrose or Tesco products are known to be affected.

Waitrose has recalled the affected products, which came from a single batch of houmous in which salmonella was present. As a precautionary measure, it has also recalled 11 further products made from the same batch of houmous. Tesco has recalled the two date codes of the affected products listed above and removed from sale all other date codes of these products as a precautionary measure. Both companies have issued point-of-sale notices in their stores telling customers what they should do if they have bought any of these products.

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). Food alerts are the FSA's way of letting local authorities and consumers know about problems associated with food and, in some cases, providing details of specific action to be taken.
