The Food Standards Agency is asking the fresh produce industry and other interested parties for their views on the regulatory impact of publishing guidance on 'Managing Manures for Food Safety'.
The purpose of the guidance is to reduce the number of people who become ill with foodborne disease from ready-to-eat crops, and to provide growers with practical advice on how to reduce the risk of contamination when using farm manures to improve soil fertility.
Around 90 million tonnes of farm manures are applied each year to agricultural land approximately twice the size of Wales (four million hectares) in Britain. These manures can sometimes contain bugs such as E. coli , salmonella, listeria and campylobacter, which may cause foodborne illness.
A public consultation took place in 2002 and the guidance was revised in the light of comments and agreed with key stakeholders. Before publication, a formal assessment of its regulatory impact on the fresh produce industry is needed.
Comments can be submitted to the Agency until 20 December 2007. For more information on the guidance and the Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) click on the links below or contact David Alexander at the Food Standards Agency:
