The Agency has launched a version of 'Safer food, better business' (SFBB) that is specially designed for small retail businesses across the UK.
‘I would commend the Food Standards Agency for developing a pragmatic and proportionate approach to food safety management’
The pack contains practical, jargon-free information to help retailers comply with food hygiene regulations. It is suitable for small retail businesses selling food that needs to be kept cold to keep it safe, such as milk.
An estimated 60,000 small retail businesses will be covered by the scope of the pack, including small convenience stores and confectioners, tobacconists and newsagents.
Dr Kevin Hawkins, the Director General of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said: 'The British Retail Consortium represents a large number of smaller retailers who will directly benefit from this initiative. I would commend the Food Standards Agency for the way they have responded to the implementation of the EC Food Hygiene Regulation for small retail businesses by developing a pragmatic and proportionate approach to food safety management.'
The pack contains a series of 'safe methods', which are factsheets for businesses to work through and complete. These are divided into five sections, including the '4 Cs': Cross-contamination, Cleaning, Chilling and Cooking, and an additional section on Management. It also comes with a diary, to be signed every day by the person who is responsible for food safety in the business. The SFBB pack for caterers is already being used in thousands of businesses.
