Vitamins and minerals stakeholder meeting

Tuesday 22 August 2006

vitamins and minerals

The Food Standards Agency is to hold a second meeting with stakeholders on its draft response to a European Commission (EC) discussion document on setting maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in foodstuffs.

The meeting will be held on 4 September 2006 at the Agency's London offices. Representatives from the supplements and food industry, health organisations, consumer groups, independent scientific committee members and officials from other Government departments have been invited.

The meeting will be a further opportunity for stakeholders to comment on the EC discussion document and the draft response, which has been updated to take into account comments made at an earlier meeting held by the Agency on 25 July.

Under the Food Supplements Directive, the EC can set maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in all food supplements sold in the European Union. A separate regulation also allows maximum levels to be set for the addition of vitamins and minerals to food (fortification). Before issuing formal proposals on the issue, the EC has published the discussion document for comment by stakeholders by 30 September 2006.

Numbers at the meeting are restricted, but should you be interested in attending, please contact the Agency by 5pm on 30 August at supps_consult@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk or by fax at 020 7276 8564. Confirmation of attendance will then be issued.

Comments may also be sent direct to the EC via its website at the link below.
