The Veterinary Residues Committee (VRC), an independent committee that advises the Agency on the implications of veterinary medicine residues for people�s health, has announced its second open meeting on 7 October 2005 at the Fishmongers' Hall, London.
The VRC also advises Ministers and the Chief Executives of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) as well as the FSA on the frequency and levels of residues of veterinary medicines in samples of a wide range of foods collected under the VMD�s surveillance programmes.
It is particularly concerned with food safety and the implications of veterinary medicines residues for consumer health, ensuring that recommendations for use of veterinary medicines are followed and do not result in residue levels above legal limits.
The FSA has a watchdog and advisory role with regard to the committee's activities, helping to ensure that consumer safety and interests are afforded a high priority. The FSA, together with the VMD and enforcement authorities, act on any adverse findings which have implications for consumer health, to protect consumers and the food chain.
